Tulane University’s Ph.D. program in French Studies

All students admitted to our program receive financial support in the form of fellowships and teaching assistantships that include full tuition remission and a stipend of $21,500. We also offer additional financial support on a competitive basis for research and travel to conferences, and the opportunity for students to spend a year in Paris through our exchange program with l'Ecole Normale Supérieure-Ulm.

Graduate study at Tulane fosters a comprehensive and integrative approach to French Studies. The program’s areas of strength include Francophone and Afro-Caribbean studies, medieval and early modern studies, cultural studies, critical theory, Creole linguistics, performance studies, and European and African philosophy. Interdisciplinary study is further fostered through the Department’s course offerings in Arabic and Haitian Creole, and through its strong ties to other programs and departments at Tulane, including African & African Diaspora Studies, Anthropology, Art, History, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, and Philosophy.

The Department maintains a rich intellectual life, organizing conferences and hosting numerous distinguished scholars every year. In addition, our students have access to rich archival resources on campus and in the city of New Orleans, including the Amistad Research Center (primary source materials pertaining to the history of slavery), the New Orleans Notarial Archives (documents in French dating to the early eighteenth century) and, of course, the cultural and linguistic laboratory that is French Acadiana.
